Using the Katie is a Teacher Introduction to Twelfth Night In Your Class

Are you teaching William Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night? Are you worried about how to get your students excited about Shakespeare while also ensuring they’re ready to learn?

Teaching Shakespeare can be a daunting task. It was always my favourite as a student (maybe that’s why I became an English teacher), but I know I was definitely in the minority! Luckily, there are tools to help you jump in and get your students ready to learn!

I created my Introduction to Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night when I was teaching a group of 33 boys and 2 girls at a sports school. Not to stereotype, but I suspected they may not be Shakespeare’s target audience, especially when reading the play versus viewing it. I wanted something educational that would also be easy for them to jump in with.

Many teachers face similar challenges and don’t know exactly where to start with Shakespeare. But what if there was an easy and fun way to introduce your students to Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night?

Let me present you with one of my most popular Katie is a Teacher products, An Introduction to Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night. This product provides you with an excellent way to introduce one of Shakespeare’s most popular play to your students.

When you purchase this product and put it into use in your classroom, your students will be able to:

  • Read the summary of the play to pique their interest before beginning
  • Become acquainted with the characters and their relationship to one another
  • Understand the overview of each scene in the play

With this introduction, you’ll be able to provide your students with a breakdown of the important pieces of the play, supporting them as they make their way through what can often be challenging language. This will help alleviate much of the confusion that often accompanies learning Shakespeare.

As I noted above, when I first created this resource, I used it for my grade eleven students in a setting where they were not particularly excited to learn Shakespeare. I created it to help support them in understanding the play and breaking it down to keep them from becoming confused due to language.

You can present this to students at the beginning of the unit as you introduce the play and its characters. You can also utilise it as you make your way through the play, as students can refer to each scene overview.

I also find this to be a useful resource to provide to students at the end of the term to guide in their studying and preparing for their final exams.

Also included is a She’s the Man and Twelfth Night comparison chart to have students compare and contrast at the end of the unit. I loved showing students the full She’s the Man film (if time allowed) or even just clips to compare to the play; it’s a fun way to set the play in a modern setting for students.

I’ve struggled to find materials relating to “Twelfth Night” and am so glad I found this one! Excellent format that I could hand out as is!
