Are you a teacher struggling to find the balance between work and personal life? Do your work days and personal evenings seem to blend into one another, leaving you little time to focus on yourself and your physical and mental health? Imagine unlocking unexpected benefits that could transform your professional and personal well-being.
I’ve chatted about having a morning routine specific to teachers, today I want to write about having an evening routine. These routines have become a bit buzz-wordy these days, but there’s a good reason for it. I’ve found that by establishing a consistent evening routine, teachers can experience a range of surprising advantages.
From boosted productivity and improved mental health to enhanced time management skills and increased work-life balance, a regular evening routine can make a significant difference in your life. Join in as we explore the benefits and practical tips for incorporating an evening routine into your daily life.

ROUTINES YOU MAY WANT TO INCORPORATE
To further enhance your daily routines and maximise your productivity, consider incorporating specific habits into your evening routine. These habits can help set the tone for a successful day ahead, ensuring that you start each morning feeling refreshed and prepared for whatever challenges may come your way.
Of course, these routines will vary based on your season of life and what you need, but what’s important is considering what will help you to wind down your day and set you up for success for tomorrow. Some things you may want to consider include movement (slow and calm so it doesn’t wake you up), meditation, reading, journalling, having a skin care routine, a bath or shower, listening to a podcast or audio book, and so on.
For me, I find that laying out what I need for the following morning (workout clothes, work clothes, and breakfast), completing my skincare routine, then a short evening yoga flow or stretch, followed by meditation and journaling, followed finally by reading in bed before I go to sleep works for me. This sounds intense, but I spend about 30 minutes reading in bed, and the routine before I get into bed takes only about 20-30 minutes.
Of course, this example works for my current season in life and will certainly vary for others. You may have kids, you might have evening classes or activities, you may have to get work done in the evenings, and so on. All of these can impact what you may want to do in your routine.
By making small adjustments to your evening routine, you can create a more efficient and effective workflow, ultimately leading to greater success in both your professional and personal life.
BOOSTED PRODUCTIVITY THROUGH ROUTINE
Establishing a consistent evening routine can greatly boost your productivity as a teacher. By following a set schedule each night, you can create a sense of structure and discipline that can carry over into your workday. This can help you focus on important tasks, prioritise your responsibilities, and avoid feeling overwhelmed by the demands of teaching.
Additionally, by incorporating time for reflection, planning, and self-care into your evening routine, you can set yourself up for success and ensure that you are ready to tackle whatever challenges may come your way. Ultimately, a well-established evening routine can lead to increased productivity and efficiency in your teaching practice.
This enhanced productivity can have a positive impact on your mental health and well-being, as it can reduce stress and anxiety associated with feeling unprepared or overwhelmed. By establishing a consistent routine, you can feel more in control of your workload and better equipped to handle the demands of teaching.
IMPROVED MENTAL HEALTH AND WELL-BEING
This enhanced productivity can have a positive impact on your mental health and well-being, as it can reduce stress and anxiety associated with feeling unprepared or overwhelmed. By establishing a consistent routine, you can feel more in control of your workload and better equipped to handle the demands of teaching.
I began utilising evening and morning routines during lockdown when my days were bleeding together and I needed some structure to begin differentiating between work and personal time. I found the routines benefitted my overall wellness so positively that I kept them up after we went back to work.
Having a sense of control over your days can lead to a greater sense of peace and satisfaction, ultimately contributing to a healthier mindset and overall well-being. Enhanced time management skills can further solidify your sense of control and effectiveness in your teaching practice.
ENHANCED TIME MANAGEMENT SKILLS
In addition to the mental health benefits, establishing a consistent evening routine can also enhance your time management skills. By setting aside dedicated time for planning and preparation, you can prioritise tasks, allocate your resources effectively, and optimise your workflow.
This improved organisation can help you make the most of your time and energy, allowing you to focus on what truly matters in your teaching practice. As a result, you can feel more in control and efficient, leading to a greater sense of accomplishment and productivity in your work.
It’s easy to feel out of control as teachers, as so much of our days are reactions to things that happen out of our control. Students got into a fight during recess? Get on it! A parent just sent an irate email? Stew on it all day! Setting up and closing our days with time that is completely in our control is a good way to build these time management skills and recognise the things we can versus cannot control.
This newfound skill set can lay the foundation for better work-life balance, allowing you to enjoy your personal time without the looming stress of unfinished tasks or last-minute preparations.
INCREASED WORK-LIFE BALANCE
With improved time management skills, you can create a more harmonious balance between your work and personal life. By efficiently handling your responsibilities during your evening routine, you can free up mental space and time for relaxation, hobbies, and spending quality moments with loved ones.
As I mentioned above, I began using evening and morning routines during lockdown, when I found it difficult to have work-life balance. It worked so well I kept it up and I find that I now have very clear boundaries between work and home. This has definitely improved both my physical and mental health, as well as improved my relationships with people at work and at home.
Achieving a sense of equilibrium between your professional and personal life is essential for your overall well-being and happiness. By establishing a consistent evening routine to enhance your time management skills, you can pave the way for a more fulfilling and balanced life.

In conclusion, establishing a consistent evening routine can lead to a multitude of benefits for teachers, including increased productivity, improved mental health, better time management skills, and a healthier work-life balance. By taking the simple step of creating a nightly routine, teachers can transform their professional and personal lives for the better.
Remember, small changes can lead to big results. Start implementing your evening routine today and experience the positive impact it can have on your well-being and success. As the saying goes, “Success is the sum of small efforts, repeated day in and day out.”
