Well, I love the name…

…because I love salt.

I first tried out Saltlik a couple years back and I really enjoyed it.

I like the whole ambiance of the restaurant, and I really like that it serves steak. You know, on account of my love of steak.

The food is good and reasonably priced.

It becomes difficult to describe a steak house without comparing it to others in the city, so that is what I’m going to do.

It’s about on par with The Keg, maybe slightly better. It’s better than Chop. It’s not as good as Vintage.

Their baked potatoes are probably my favourites in the city; make sure you get one with all the fixin’s. Seriously.

The service is really good and the restaurant isn’t as loud as The Keg (I’m thinking of the one right below the Westin downtown; the one on 5th street isn’t too loud).

Saltlik Steakhouse on Urbanspoon  I’d definitely recommend trying Saltlik out. It probably won’t become your new favourite steakhouse, but it’s definitely worth a try. Make sure you try their molten chocolate cake. Delicious.

Well, I do love a good steak…

Usually when I go to steakhouses I keep my health moderately in check and order fish or chicken. However, recently I’ve decided that I am a lady and probably have low iron and, because I like to keep my health in check, I should eat more red meat. It’s been going well.

I recently visited Caesar’s and, even if I was trying to be uber healthy, I probably still would have gotten steak because you can’t go to Caesar’s and not order steak. Seriously; I’m fairly certain it’s against the law.

What Caesar’s is both praised and slaughtered for consistently is what some call the fact that it’s “classic” and others call extremely “dated”. It all comes down to personal preference and food quality, really.

I have only been to Caesar’s a handful of times, but I have never had bad service. Personally, I find it quite nice to go to a restaurant that still values proper service and etiquette (read; you won’t see waiters piling your dishes on top of one another at the table) simply because you rarely see it in most restaurants.

The decor, yes, is extremely dated and horribly cheesy. You will feel like you’re walking into Caesar’s Palace in Vegas. All that’s missing is the massive animatronic Fall of Atlantis fountain show.

The food is fine. I will say that the steak is good. Very, very good. Everything else is just fine. Nothing spectacular.

Caesar's Steak House on Urbanspoon   What it all comes down to is that Caesar’s does not serve amazing, mouth-watering, phenomenal food; it serves good food. However, because it is a “classic Calgary institution” all of us Calgarians who have grown up here will continue to go there, to love it, and to defend its honour when need be. We’re proud of the few Calgary-isms we have and if Caesar’s ever did change their menu, decor, or service, we would be up in arms. Truth be told, if you want better food in a more modern atmosphere, go to The Keg or Vintage. That being said, Caesar’s is basically a Calgary institution and it shouldn’t be changed in the slightest.

Yum, Ahi Tuna FTW

I went to Vintage Chophouse the other night on account of my hunger for a nice juicy steak. However, after sitting down and taking a look at the menu, it was the grilled ahi tuna which really caught my eye. And three cheers for my choice, because I was definitely not disappointed.

Perhaps it was the half a bottle of wine I drank, but probably not, it was legitimately the best ahi tuna I have ever had. Covered in seasame seeds and grilled to perfection, I still dream about it at night.

The sides we all ordered were good, though the scalloped potatoes were the weakest of the bunch and nothing to write home about. The asparagus was good, though I would have been mighty impressed if it had been bad because that seems like quite a feat to accomplish. By far the best though was the macaroni and cheese. Holy hell. I had one bite and it was so rich I had to stop.

Vintage Chophouse & Tavern on Urbanspoon And finally, the steaks. Unsurprisingly, I was the only dork who ordered tuna. At the table we had a couple of rib eyes and a sirloin and I have to say, they were all perfect. Cooked just right and some of the best steak I have had. So overall, I one hundred percent recommend hitting up Vintage. You will not be disappointed.

Epic Amounts of Food

When my family and I go out, we go out hard. I’m not going to lie; we love food. For my brother’s birthday dinner this year, he decided that, in order to fully satisfy his love of food, he couldn’t go to just one restaurant, but rather three. Yes, he decided that we needed to go out for suchi, then for steak, then for milkshakes (basically the most horrible places for a vegan). We went to Misato (one of my favourites for sushi in the city; you can check out a review of them I did here), then to Chop, and finally to Peters’ Drive-In.

At Misato, I ordered the same tomato roll I did the last time I was there, remembering how good it was. I decided to be immensely rude and attempt to (as politely as possible) remove as much rice from the sides of the roll as possible, knowing that more food was to follow and that the last time I was there I became very full very quickly. My parents and brother got two orders of the Assorted Sushi to share and they all enjoyed it. One roll in particular I have never seen in all of my years of sushi eating (which is several years, let me assure you); it was pure white and covered in ridges. It actually looked like a giant bug. It wasn’t of course, it turned out to be squid and according to the fam, it was very chewy without a lot of flavour. I don’t think they’ll be ordering that particular roll again, though the rest of the assortment was very good.

Next, we headed to Chop, which is attached to Chinook Centre. My family are true Calgarians through and through, so we love our steak. My mom and I split a bottle of wine while my dad and brother each ordered a beer. There was not much for me to choose from (which doesn’t surprise or offend me), but our server told me that he could ask the kitchen to make a larger version of their house side salad. My mom ordered the Chop Salad, and both my dad and brother ordered the Top Sirloin, medium rare. Though I ordered mine with dressing on the side (on account of the fact that I don’t like it and most vinagrettes tend to hurt my tongue), but it came with full dressing. Unimpressed. My dad’s and brother’s steaks were both good, but my dad’s scalloped pototoes were dry and, as he described, “like eating paper”. Additionally, their vegetables were far too butter-y for even their liking (believe you me, they like their butter). My mom’s Chop Salad was by far the best, with tons of cheese and steak. However, the pieces of steak on her salad were all over cooked. Overall, we all agreed that both The Keg and Chicago Chophouse are infinitely better options for steak.

Finally, we headed to Peters’ for milkshakes. I have no idea how my dad and brother managed to eat all that food. My mom and I waited in the car, eyeing cute firefighters, as they ordered. What can you say about Peters’? It’s delicious and everyone knows it. My dad got a banana milkshake and my brother got a coffee oreo one (my personal favourite and what I would have definitely gotten if it weren’t for my newfound non-dairy ways is the mocha oreo, which is also delicious when you add a little bit of Bailey’s to it).

Overall, Misato and Peters’ were just as good as I expected and as they always tend to be. As far as Chop goes, I would definitely give it a pass. Our server was very obviously attempting to memorize a poorly-rehersed script, which was both annoying and uncomfortable. The food was average.
