Always game for more Italian

I love Italian food on account of the fact that I love tomatoes and carbs. I also love wine. All good things.

Thus, I knew that I needed to try out Cibo on 17th Avenue.

I was a big fan of the interior. Very open and modern. I apreciated how light it was as well, as I find so many restaurants are opting for dimly lit dining areas lately and it’s rather depressing and sleep-inducing.

We started with three appetizers (which are very small; our waiter told us they were meant for tasting and he was not lying). We had lamb meatballs, bruscetta, and peppers. All of them were awesome, particularly the bruscetta.

For the main course we ordered the pineapple and the sundried tomato pizzas.

The crust was delicious. Not too thick or thin, and the toppings were all marvelous and complemented one another nicely.

Cibo on Urbanspoon  I will definitely be coming abck to Cibo. It’s very close to my apartment, our food was good, I loved the atmosphere, and the service was phenomenal. Our server was extremely friendly and very knowledgeable about both the drinks list and the menu. Highly recommended.

All muh ladies

I recently headed to Buon Giorno with all the ladies in my family. There were about 12 of us in total and it was lovely for everyone to get to spend some quality time together with good wine, good, food, and good company.

Buon Giorno is a family favourite of ours on account of the nice atmosphere, great location, good food, and moderate price.

We ordered bruscetta and calamari to start, as well as lots and lots of wine. The bruscetta was delicious, as was the calamari, though I am always disappointed when it lacks the crispy legs (my favouirte part, mmmm). For my main course I ordered veal-wrapped prawns with a tomato sauce and vegetables. I have to say, it was absolutely wonderful and just the right amount of food!

Buon Giorno on UrbanspoonAll in all, I wholly advise people to check out Buon Giorno. If you like italian, it is definitely a great place to god. Especially if you are looking for somewhere on 17th avenue since it blows awful places like Chianti and mediocre places like Fiore out of the water.

Let’s all have fun on Yates Street!

Oft when I am in Victoria my friends will say: “Katie, let’s have a classic night out ‘Vic style’ and go for a great dinner and then to 90′s night at Lucky”. To which I will respond: “Sure! Can I choose the restaurant?”

Then, we will go to one of my favourite restaurants, situated conveniently close to Lucky and I will have an amazing dinner and proceed to skip out on the rest of the evening because Lucky is the shittiest bar ever and 90′s night was created simply for all the first and second UVic and Camosun students to make me want to hurl myself off of a building.

Most recently we hit up Fiamo before I ditched all my friends to wait in the stupid long line at Lucky for 2 hours before getting in and being swarmed by children while perspiration drips off of the ceiling onto the dancefloor.

When I lived full-time in Vic, I loved going to Fiamo. The food and drinks are amazing, and the service is wonderful. Plus, a friend of mine worked there for awhile so we’d go in to visit/harass her.

If you’re going with a group, I highly recommend starting with appetizers. My personal favourites are the meatballs and the B.C. mushrooms.

As for your entree, Fiamo has excellent choices! Their pizzas are amazing! Split one or two with a friend to try more than one! My personal favourites are the roasted vegetable and the smoked salmon. I tend to stray away from pasta because it’s so heavy, but Fiamo has excellent gnocchi and I like their ravioli. Also phenomenal is their chicken parmesan. I highly recommend it to everyone!

Fiamo Italian Kitchen on Urbanspoon All in all, go to Fiamo. It’s a little bit pricey for students, but it’s worth it. Save the money you were going to spend going to 90′s night at Lucky and spend it at Fiamo. Then go back to your place and listen to a 90′s/early 2000′s playlist and dance around your living room with friends. You;ll ahve a better time and be better fed. /advice from Katie.

Friends and families from afar

A couple weekends ago one of my good friends from Victoria had her family come in to see her. It had me reminiscing on when I was still studying in Vic and feeling the strain of being away from my family and friends in Calgary. I was just so happy for her because I know what it’s like to be reunited with the people you love, even when you’ve only been apart for a few months.

I was invited out for drinks and dinner with them and we decided to hit up Pagliacci’s because it’s her favourite spot in Victoria and I guess she’s been talking it up to them for quite some time now. I’ve only been a couple of times because of the fact that I’m both impatient and claustrophobic, and there’s usually a line to get in.

Unsurprisingly, there was a line-up greeting us when we arrived, but thankfully it wasn’t raining outside (I’ve been in that predicament before and it’s the pits). We waited in line for probably about 35 minutes, and were served wine (thank God; it was much needed) while we waited. I wish that the restaurant was bigger both because it would reduce waiting times and also because, once you actually get inside you would have a bit more room; the interior is rather cramped.

Once you are seated, you’ll probably be starving, but never fear because you will definitely be fed and be fed well at Pagliacci’s. For all that I complain about the wait and the claustrophobia, I always remember exactly why it’s worth it as soon as I begin eating. I tried to treat myself like an eight year old and tell myself not to eat too much of the bread before ordering (it’s hard when you’re so hungry!), and I somewhat succeeded.

We ordered the Somerset Praughns to start and they were delicious, the spice and the citrus really complimented one another. I ordered the Salmon Salad because I remembered the last time I had eaten at Pag’s I had been infinitely full after ordering The Big Easy (which is delicious!) and I didn’t want to make the same mistake twice. The salad was delicious, but all of my companions’ pasta and entree dishes did look more appetizing.

We finished by splitting the Turtle Pie, which was phenomenal. I’ve also had the Marble Cheesecake before which is very rich and very good. If you’re still feeling like dessert after epic amounts of delicious food, order this to share or order it to go because it’s very rich and very filling.

Pagliacci's on Urbanspoon         Overall, I do recommend Pagliacci’s, but only if you don’t mind a wait. The food is very good and very filling (order the smaller portion of pasta, believe me), but I personally avoid going to restaurants I have to wait so long to get into. Particularly when there are so many other great places in Victoria you can get into quicker, try to go to Pag’s on a weeknight or at a time when you won’t have such a brutal wait ahead of you.
