I headed to Misato in Signal Hill last week with the fam to get some much-craved sushi. I haven’t been out for sushi since becoming vegan, so I was both excited at the prospect of trying new rolls and also distraught at having to miss out on my favourites (tuna sashimi, mmmmm, so good). Misato has become a favourite locale of mine since Kyoto 17 shut down (which must have been about 3 years ago now). It’s very affordable, the service is great, and the food is delicious. I had always been a fan of their lunch box special, which includes sushi, sashimi, salad, miso soup, tempura, and teryaki chicken or beef.
On this visit, however, I obviously had to make a few changes on my selection. Not only because I was there for dinner, but also because I don’t eat 90% of what’s served in the box specials. I wasn’t particularly interested in the vegetarian california rolls, which were basically what I ate when I first started eating sushi in 6th grade (boring). Thus, I ordered the Matango Roll and the California Tomato Roll, not really having any idea what to expect.
Being the glutton that I am, I was concerned that two rolls and a bowl of miso soup wouldn’t fill me up, but I was wholly mistaken. In fact, I found myself overwhelmed by the amount of food I received and couldn’t finish it all. Truth be told, I have issues with what I like to refer to as the “Americanization of Japanese food”. While sushi is an extension of Japanese cuture and reflects that no piece of food should be larger than a bite, North Americans have somehow decided that we just don’t get enough food out of such a deal. Therefore we jam as much rice, fish, vegetables, and so forth into our sushi. Oh, and we also add mayonnaise (disgusting – I’m a “no mayonnaise on or in anything” kind of girl). The rolls were absolutely delicious, but far too big. I found myself attempting to find a polite way to remove excess rice from the outside of my rolls (hint: there is no polite way to do this).
Overall, I highly recommend Misato. Both their vegetarian and meat/fish options are delicious and the service is wonderful.
